Spray painting kitchen cabinets can be one of the most rewarding projects around the house.
Refinished a kitchen this past week.
Refinishing and spraying cabinets is a rewarding project worthy of pursuit, but a little bit of research and focused preparation goes very far.
Project included replacing the crown, adding a crown piece over the sink, and refinishing with satin lacquer. Cabinets are a shade of white, island is a shade of gray. The chair was black; we painted it gray. Entire process on site was four long days, in shop two days, all by myself except for the last day when my son helped me finish reassembling the kitchen; I could not have done it without him.

Taping, Papering & Masking
Everything except for what was getting painted was covered and masked. Spray will find its way into areas that are not covered and sealed. During painting, it is important to ensure all the tape is secure as you go. Protective materials shift, expand and contract during the wet spraying process and can cause separation of the protective seals. Sometimes it becomes necessary to reapply or replace sections of paper and making tape.
We used a product called Ram Board to cover and protect the floors. If you are going to use Ram Board, it is very important that you do not use or allow the Ram Board tape to come in contact with the floor, but only to join sections of the covering itself. The Ram Board tape will stick very securely to any hard surface causing extra work in removing it, not to mention the possibility of damaging the floor while attempting to remove it.
